RE: Weather Outlook
issued for 6/7/8/9 January 2009
Another forecasted storm is anticipated to begin Tuesday evening through Friday of this week that could produce flooding in SW Washington. According to the National Weather Service, this storm is expected to focus primarily on SW Washington.
The important bullet facts retrieved from the National Weather Service (NWS) conference call at 1500hrs today are listed below:
Summary:
Strong system loaded with tropical moisture will impact SW Washington and NW Oregon between Tuesday night and Friday morning
Precipitation will be significant: Up to 1 inch from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning and 2-5 inches from Wednesday and Thursday. This precipitation combined with snowmelt due to freezing levels at 7-9,000 feet has the potential for flooding. The foothills may see in excess of 3 inches of rain.
Temperature will be between 40 and 50, with lows in the low to mid 30s. As of Thursday temperatures and freezing level (to pass elevations) will drop and precipitation will lessen.
Key rivers of local concern include the Cowlitz River at Kelso and Castle Rock and the Lewis River. Although all rivers could see some flooding during this storm.
Obviously there is high probability of landslides and, where applicable, avalanche danger is high.
Most wind will be experienced in the Coast Range and in the Cascades.
