The Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board (LCFRB) and the Grays River Work Group would like to invite you to a community workshop to discuss their recent efforts in developing a community-based salmon habitat restoration strategy for the Lower Grays River. The workshop will be held on October 28th at the Grays River Grange meeting at 7pm. You will have an opportunity to review and provide your comments and suggestions on our efforts to date to identify the potential restoration opportunities for the Grays River.
To succeed, salmon habitat restoration must not only meet the needs of the fish, it must also strive to be responsive to the interests and needs of the community. Over the past year and a half, the Grays River Work Group has met regularly to discuss habitat restoration opportunities in the Grays River. This effort has involved federal and state agency staff, restoration organizations, and numerous community members.
The Work Group with the help of a consultant has attempted to weigh and address current watershed conditions, the needs of fish, and the interests of the community with the ultimate goal of developing a restoration strategy that will benefit fish populations in the Grays River and work for landowners and the community. Existing studies have been considered. Aerial and ground field surveys have been conducted to investigate watershed conditions and identify potential project opportunities. Options and priorities have been reviewed and discussed by the Work Group and a preliminary project list has been prepared.
We are now seeking the help of the Grays River Community as we work to complete the habitat restoration strategy. The ability to secure funding and implement habitat restoration projects depends on community support and landowner participation. The workshop will provide community members the opportunity to review potential projects, talk with Work Group Members and the consultants, and provide their comments, ideas, and suggestions. Meeting materials are available for review.
We hope that you will join us.
